Macchiato vs Mocha: What is The Difference?

If you’ve walked into a coffee shop lately, then you probably know that there are a heck of a lot of coffee options than there once were.

The days of ordering a black coffee seem to be gone forever.

And there is now an overwhelming amount of different coffees available to choose from. In fact, there are so many different choices available to you that it may very well leave you standing completely confused, trying to figure out if you want a cappuccino, Café macchiato, or Flat white.

While it is intimidating to be confronted with all of these coffee options, it’s not as difficult as you would imagine. There are popular drinks on the market today and, in fact, lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, latte macchiatos, and flat whites are all quite similar.

The only real difference is that the ratios of steamed milk, espresso, and milk foam the drink uses.

Macchiato

A macchiato is traditionally made by combining a shot of espresso and a small splash of milk.

It’s usually made using a small amount of milk and therefore has a much more potent flavor than other types of coffee. Macchiatos are made to be served and sipped in a mug.

So ultimately, you’ll be able to taste some espresso, some sweet milk, and perhaps some caramel while enjoying the foam and body of the drink. Macchiatos also don’t have as good of an effect when drunk out of a foam cup.

Preparation – Traditional Macchiato

So to begin making a macchiato, you’ll need espresso, and each standard double shot needs between 0.6 to 0.7 ounces of coffee. But this depends on how strong you want the shot.

Then measure the coffee beans and transfer them to a coffee grinder. If you’re not sure how fine the coffee beans should be, then use fine salt as a guideline. This is ultimately the ideal grind for espresso.

Step 2

In this step, you need to fill the portafilter with the espresso grounds. Start by removing the portafilter from the ground head.

The portafilter should be clean, and you should then fill it with the freshly ground coffee. Tap it against your hand to distribute the grounds evenly and then compact them.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to go through the hassle of grinding coffee beans, simply purchase pre-ground espresso from a coffee shop or grocery store. In the event that you don’t have access to a home espresso maker or professional espresso maker, you can use a stovetop espresso maker.

Thereafter, place the grounds into the inner basket, and spread them around with your finger. Alternatively, in place of espresso, you may use strong coffee, or if you don’t have any means of making espresso.

In this step, you must return the portafilter to the group head and turn to lock it in place.

Place a demitasse under the filter and allow the water to run for approximately 30 seconds to extract the shot.

You can also stir the espresso to distribute the foam that builds up on top. While most people don’t do this, it is highly recommended as it will disperse the bitterness, especially on your first sip.

If you’re using a stovetop espresso maker, fill the reservoir with water until the maximum waterline. Place the filter inside it and screw it on the top.

On medium heat, allow the espresso to heat up until it bubbles over and spills into the reservoir. Then pour the espresso into the demitasse.

Step 4

In the step, you want to transfer cold milk to the tall metal container. The container should be held at a 45-degree angle to the milk wand.

Insert the steam wand into the milk and turn on the steam. The milk should be steamed until the container is hot to the touch, and the milk has obviously increased in volume.

The ideal temperature for steaming milk is around 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 5

When the milk is steamed, pour it into the espresso. Use a spoon to drop a dollop of cream on top.

Then serve the macchiato immediately. You may also garnish it on the top with a little bit of cinnamon or sugar. Alternatively, enjoy it as is.

A typical mocha drink contains anywhere between 90 to 175 mg of caffeine.
