If you’re a genuine coffee lover, then there’s no way you’re going to go camping without having access to coffee. In that case, are you looking for the best camping coffee makers?

Outdoor adventures like hiking and camping demand momentary abstinence from your daily habits. This includes browsing through Instagram, replying to emails, watching Netflix, etc. But this certainly does not include enjoying a cup of freshly brewed, hot coffee.

Especially when camping and hiking, that feeling of drinking warm coffee when sitting next to a campfire beats every other materialistic experience. So for these kinds of nature lovers and caffeine addicts, here are our top 15 recommendations.

Our Top Pick: AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker

AeroPress

The AeroPress is a very popular choice among coffee enthusiasts worldwide. And why wouldn’t it be when the coffee and espresso maker is best for both indoor and outdoor use. But the fact that serious coffee lovers can carry it for travel is the most attractive quality.

Ideal conditions like total immersion, rapid filtering, and proper temperature are a part of the AeroPress. So your every effort turns out to be delicious with all the flavors of your favorite coffee but without any bitterness or high acidity.

The microfilter of this thing eliminates grit, which is something that doesn’t happen with a French Press. Now you know why you should be camping with AeroPress and not French Press.

Needless to say, this portable coffee maker brews espresso style coffee for your favorite lattes, cappuccinos, and other espresso-based beverages. A single pressing here gives you 1-3 cups of freshly brewed coffee. And even cleanup takes only seconds.

AeroPress Coffee Key Features

  • Lightweight, portable, compact, and durable
  • A rapid, total immersion brewing process
  • BPA-free and phthalate-free

Our Runner-Up: Coleman Camping Coffee Maker

When looking for a coffee maker perfect for camping, it’s only common for Coleman to come up. After all, this is an ideal choice for camping as it brews as many as 10 cups of delicious coffee on a camp stove. It’s our second-best pick at Koobies for quite a few reasons.

The steel base of the coffee maker is the most suitable for stove burners used for camping. All you have to do is fill up the reservoir. Once the water begins boiling, it moves through the compact unit’s filter and brews into its glass decanter.

If you’re one of those coffee enthusiasts who simply cannot wait for the whole pot to finish brewing, then there’s the perfect Pause N Serve feature for you.

The entire process is simple for outdoor use. You spoon your favorite, flavor-packed coffee grounds into the removable filter basket before adding water and then placing the coffee maker on top of the heat source.

Coleman Coffee Maker Key Features

  • Large 10-cup coffee brewing capacity

Best Camping Percolator: GSI Outdoors Enamelware Percolator

Speaking of the design, this percolator is kiln-hardened not once but twice for being able to withstand chipping and scratches. On top of that, the percolator’s 3-ply construction makes way for maximum heat distribution.

Best Camping Coffee Pot: Bialetti 06800 Express Moka Pot

Bialetti 06800 Express Moka Pot

Bialetti offers the original way of preparing authentic espresso at home or when outdoors. The Moka pot makes 6 whole cups of your favorite, delicious coffee. You get to brew your coffee like the Italians.

The brewing process of the Moka pot extracts the most exquisite flavors of coffee. Just make sure you’re using the right grind size because this affects the way your coffee tastes.

In the case of a Moka pot, avoid too coarse or too fine coffee grind. Too coarse means weak, tasteless coffee. And too fine tends to clog the pot during brewing.

Keeping that in mind, the coffee you prepare is strong, dark, and rich. And the brewing takes only a few minutes as soon as the water starts to boil. This allows the bitterness that is often accompanied by such slow-drip brewing techniques to dissipate completely.

Use the Bialetti coffee pot for your camping adventures and the chances are you’ll find it very hard to go back to your regular, drip coffee once you get home.

Bialetti 06800 Express Moka Pot Key Features

  • Moka pot coffee prepares a rich, strong brew
  • Easy to assemble/disassemble safety valve
  • Made of high-quality, polished aluminum

The modern, food-safe, FDA silicone body makes SlickDrip a very durable option. Much more than its ceramic, glass, and acrylic counterparts. Silicone also doesn’t affect the taste or flavor of your coffee, unlike plastic. It’s a great alternative to a bulky, expensive machine.

Camping Coffee Makers: Who Should Buy It and Why?

Woman Drinking Coffee On Camping

If you’re a true coffee lover, then you already know the answer to this question. A coffee maker ideal to carry for outdoor adventures makes sure you don’t have to compromise on the taste, flavor, and quality of the coffee.

These coffee makers are portable, lightweight, and compact little things that are easy to pack, store, and carry. On top of that, you can prepare your delicious favorite coffee in them using the camping stove or campfire. The brewing process is quick and easy too.

Choosing the Best Coffee Maker for Camping

The best way to buy a coffee maker if you’re a genuine outdoor enthusiast as well as caffeine addict is by taking the following factors into account.

Weight

By far, the most crucial aspect for campers, backpackers, hikers, and the like. Because it matters how much weight you carry. In that case, you ought to go for a coffee maker that’s super lightweight. To be more specific, something that weighs between 1 to 5 ounces.

Brewing Capacity

This depends on how many of you traveling. Are you camping with a group of family or friends? If yes, which is most likely the case, then you might want to get a coffee maker that prepares more than just one cup at a time. There are many such large-capacity camping coffee makers, such as the 12-cup pour over I’ve reviewed.

As for the ones equipped with a water reservoir, make sure the capacity here too is large enough for your group. You’d be better off with a coffee maker that holds enough water to prepare at least 10 cups of coffee at one go.

Portability

When I say portability, I don’t necessarily mean the coffee maker should be just light in weight. Of course, it should be but it should also be foldable or collapsible. This is usually the deal with portable pour over or drip coffee makers.

And if your coffee brewing device is either of the two, then make sure it’s at least easy to fit into your camping backpack. Go for a compact, streamlined design that isn’t a hassle to carry.

Ease Of Use

Making Camp Coffee

The brewing experience when camping or hiking is the most enjoyable when you don’t have to spend too much time assembling your coffee maker and preparing your favorite coffee. Meaning select a streamlined design with a simple, quick brewing method.

This also brings into the picture the cleaning part. You’re at the campsite, which means you may or may not have access to running water. So it’s best to buy a coffee maker that demands only minimal cleaning.

Construction & Quality

If you’re going to be using it outdoors, then the coffee maker better be tough and durable. There’s stainless steel that doesn’t crack or break easily. It’s also corrosion-resistant. And it doesn’t impart any unpleasant taste to your coffee, much like glass but glass can shatter.

As for plastic, it may not shatter like glass or rust like stainless steel, but plastic definitely adds an unpleasant, chemical-like flavor to ruin your steaming hot, delicious cup of coffee.

Another important design component includes a sturdy, large, and comfortable-to-hold handle. Then make sure the internal components like basket and stem are made using metal, thus durable and non-interfering with the taste and flavor of the coffee.

In the case of pour overs, the most durable material is silicone. It’s tougher than glass, acrylic, and ceramic. Plus, even silicone doesn’t affect the taste or flavor of your coffee, unlike plastic.

Coffee Strength

How strong you like your coffee determines what type of brewing style you prefer. Correct? This also brings into the picture the type of coffee grind you use. Is it too fine or too coarse?

How strong you like your coffee determines what type of brewing style you prefer. Correct? This also brings into the picture the type of coffee grind you use. Is it too fine or too coarse?

Another good example is the Moka pot. For this type of coffee brewing technique, you cannot use a grind size that’s neither too fine nor too coarse. The former clogs the pot while the latter gives you weak, tasteless coffee.

And now this leads me to the next very important part of the guide section.

What Are the Best Camping Coffee Brewing Methods?

Woman Pouring Coffee In Cup

1. Percolator

This type of brewing is traditional, no doubt. It’s a simple metal pot with a basket inside for your coffee grounds. The process involves boiling water and then adding the grounds. It doesn’t take more than 3-4 minutes. You can prepare coffee in a percolator on the campfire or camping stove.

2. French Press

Using a French Press is the easiest for brewing. But the clean-up part can be quite a hassle.

You just have to place the coffee grounds into the bottom of the container, then pour hot water, and allow the grounds to steep. Once the steeping is done, press down on the plunger for separating the water and grounds.

Since you can press down on the plunger whenever you like, it’s the most ideal option for preventing bitterness and over-extraction. Perfect for outdoor adventurers who prefer using coarsely ground coffee for a richer, stronger flavor on the go.

3. Pour Over or Drip Coffee

No doubt, this is the most preferred camping coffee brewing technique. You add your flavorful coffee grinds into the cone and on the filter and then pour hot water over them. Pour slowly for a deeper, stronger, more intense flavor. And quickly for a lighter brew.

It’s the most fitting choice for avid campers because of its small and compact size. Plus, a pour over coffee maker prepares coffee for a group of people as well.

4. Instant Coffee

How can anyone deny the wonderful packable and lightweight nature of instant coffee! It’s the best for camping because it’s so easy and quick to prepare. However, the taste is not the same as French Press, pour over, percolator, or any other old-fashioned brewing process.

Add the instant coffee into your cup, then add boiling water. Allow the powder to dissolve for a few seconds and that’s about it.

If you ask me, it’s the most suitable for you if you don’t want to add more weight to your bag.

5. Cowboy Coffee

Cowboy Coffee

You put your favorite coffee grounds in hot water. By far, the simplest camping coffee method in my opinion. But the thing is that coffee grounds don’t completely dissolve in water. And that means clean-up can get slightly messy. Therefore, not such a great option for camping.

There’s the clean cup method that requires a cheesecloth for placing the ground coffee inside.

Next is the sink down cowboy approach. For this, you boil water first, remove the kettle from heat, and then add coffee. After that, return the kettle back to heat, but the heat this time should be low. Allow it to simmer until the grounds settle at the bottom

And the last one is the scoop top method. It’s the same as above except that, instead of letting the coffee grounds settle at the bottom, you skim them off the surface using a spoon.

6. Bripe

You may not have heard of this one, so allow me to explain. You add coffee and water in the cup. Then you boil water with the help of just a lighter. Now may be the right time to tell you that this coffee maker features a pipe in the shape of a straw.

So once your coffee cools down (you’ll need a thermometer), you can sip your freshly prepared brew using that attached straw-like pipe. There’s a mesh filter that strains out all the coffee grounds.

You might find it odd but it’s the best for making coffee that’s very much like fine espresso shots.

7. AeroPress

At Koobies, this is one the most favorite camping coffee makers. It’s because AeroPress is a combination of French Press and pour over. It helps in preparing the smoothest, richest coffee with minimal clean-up.

You can use fine espresso coffee grounds with both styles of AeroPress. The top down design is much like pour over but with a plunger to press. And the other kind of AeroPress works like an inverted French Press, hence inverted AeroPress.

8. Moka Pot

For a strong version of Italian style coffee during camping, nothing works better than a Moka pot.  It’s a stovetop espresso maker that features an integrated metal filter basket. Therefore, no paper filters required.

There’s a bottom reservoir and serving carafe. Between these two parts lies the metal filter. You add water in the reservoir and coffee grounds in the metal filter. Once the water starts to boil, it steams through those grounds and then collects in the serving carafe.

9. Portable Espresso

Cooking Coffee While Camping

This is a hand-powered, portable espresso maker ideal for the camping life. It combines the love of coffee and outdoors.

The general rule of thumb here is to pack finely ground coffee in one compartment and hot water in the other. When pressure begins to build, steam pushes through those coffee grounds, thus pulling your delicious espresso shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What type of instant coffee is good for camping?

Firstly, instant coffee is another great choice for campers, backpackers, hikers, etc. Besides pre-ground coffee of course. And here’s why.

  • Instant coffee is lightweight to carry and more convenient to use for preparing coffee when camping.
  • Instant coffee contains very little caffeine. This is good news if you’re trying to cut back. And bad news if you crave a strong caffeine kick first thing in the morning.
  • Instant coffee is less expensive than ground coffee.
  • Instant coffee has a much longer shelf life too.

But instant coffee is not as full-bodied and aromatic as pre-ground coffee. No two ways about that!

As for what types of instant coffee are good for camping, there are 3 types of instant coffee. The first is powdered instant coffee. It’s the easiest to prepare but not convenient to use because you require a leakproof container for storage.

Then there are instant coffee cubes that you just drop into hot water. Once again, the easiest to prepare but you don’t get to adjust the strength of your coffee. And lastly, there’s pour over instant coffee that comes with disposable, convenient filter pouches.

Q. How to brew the perfect coffee when camping?

When you want to prepare great-tasting coffee, you have to take care of three very important aspects. These are a part of the brewing process.

  • Use only fresh coffee grounds.
  • Select the right grind size for your brewing technique. I mean you can’t use coarse coffee grounds with an espresso coffee maker. Likewise, too fine grind size and French Press don’t go hand in hand.
  • Make sure the water temperature is not too high. Boiling water tends to create a burnt and bitter taste.
  • Instead, make sure the temperature doesn’t exceed 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Only then does hot water unlock the right amount and level of coffee oils and flavors.

Q. How to grind coffee beans when camping?

Let’s say you have coffee beans instead of pre-ground coffee. Or maybe you just prefer freshly grinding your beans right before brewing for a richer, more complex coffee experience. In that case, how do you go about grinding beans at your campsite?

You can get the job done with a hand grinder that’s portable. It’s the most effective when it comes to grinding coffee beans on the go. Otherwise, use a heavy tool or hammer for smashing the coffee beans manually.

But when camping, you might as well carry pre-ground or instant coffee to save time and effort.

Q. What else can camping coffee pots be used for?

  • For boiling water to prepare tea.
  • For preparing hot cider.
  • For cooking or heating soap.
  • For heating water to boil hotdogs.

That’s About It!

No matter what style of brewing you prefer, having coffee within reach when camping does make the experience even more relaxing and enjoyable. The goal is to unwind and make the most of your outdoor adventures. This means preparing delicious coffee quickly and easily.

That said, you might appreciate the top 15 camping-specific coffee makers I’ve shortlisted for every outdoor enthusiast and caffeine lover. So when selecting, buy based on the type of brewing technique or grind size you enjoy the most.
