Things to Look for in the Best Coffee Makers
What is SCA-Certified?
I know you want to get your hands on the best drip coffee makers.
Why is that? You must have a specific Barista in mind whose coffee you’d like to match yours.
Don’t we all want coffee the way it’s brewed in a coffeehouse? And to have it in the comforts of your own home seems like a dream, right?
Not anymore. Coffee makers that are SCA-certified have features similar to or exactly like the features of a Barista’s. These are the coffee makers that live up to the standards of a Barista.
And how do we know this? SCA performs certain tests, every year, to shortlist the top of the line products. The newest models with accurate temperature settings, extraction intensity, and programmable drip.
Coffee makers that are SCA-certified are ideal for serious coffee lovers. So you brew specialty coffee every day instead of paying per cup at a café.
The backbone of any drip coffee maker is its quantity. How many cups does the coffee maker’s reservoir or carafe hold?
Buying an entry-level coffee maker at a low price means brewing 2-3 cups. At one time!
Cheaper coffee makers can’t give you the right temperature even at such low sizes.
The ideal benchmark for the best drip coffee makers is 6-cups or more. Keep in mind, the higher the water volume of a coffee maker. The more coffee grounds you’ll be using for the brewing process.
You might also want to consider the cup size settings on the machine. Let’s take the Keurig K55 as an example. It features 3 cup sizes from small, medium, and large.
From selecting either one, the machine sets the accurate brewing temperature. This is not only to extract the best coffee flavor, but to save power and water consumption.
Everybody loves to do things their own way.
And having programmable features is one way to control a coffee maker. You can select the brewing time, coffee strength, and much more.
Some coffee makers feature a simple power on/off button. That’s the extent to its programmability. But there are some that offer extensive features. Such as temperature, brew strength, brew-pause, and auto shut-off.
Automatic Shut Off
This feature is not only convenient for you. But it’s an energy-saver and environmental-friendly. It’s a safety feature that built-in in most coffee makers to prevent accidental fires.
For those who love to go the extra mile, a mid-brew pause is for you. It lets you pause the brewing process halfway before the whole pot is full.
It’s the ideal feature if you have a lot of coffee drinkers waiting to get their fill. Or you’re in a hurry to take your coffee to go.
Not sure whether you want a thermal or glass carafe? The point is to keep the coffee hot for as long as possible in the carafe.
Stainless steel and glass carafe consists of a hot plate or burner. A burner does an excellent job of warming up the coffee. But that often results in you getting a burned after-taste. Especially if you drink the coffee a few hours after brewing it!
However, do you often end up sneaking in a quick cup? Then you can choose from a glass or stainless steel carafe.
A thermal carafe, on the other hand, has many benefits. They maintain coffee’s original flavor and aroma. You won’t find lime deposits or oxidization at the bottom of the carafe. And thermal carafes are safe to keep around children as they are shatter-proof.
Filters (reusable, paper, permanent)
This important factor affects the flavor of coffee. And not the overall performance of the coffee maker!
The most common type of coffee filter is a reusable filter of mesh stainless steel. They are washable but not the best eco-friendly option.
Paper filters are disposable and natural. They are less expensive than reusable. But the only issue with them is that you have to keep buying them. Compared to reusable or permanent coffee filters, paper filters cost more.
Have you bought a coffee maker with a brew strength indicator? Don’t worry. I’ve got the ideal brewing chart for you.
For a drip coffee maker, you need a coarser grind. The first thing you need to do is measure the water-to-ground ratio. For every 6 ounces of water, you take 2 tablespoons of coffee.
Having said that, a good coffee maker tells you the exact grind you need. And the more accurate the brew strength you get to choose, the better!
It’s the right coffee maker if it sets the temperature at 195 to 205 degrees. Even better if it lets you control it! The water temperature is very important to the quality of the coffee. That’s the ideal temperature for extracting flavor and aroma.
If the water gets any colder, your coffee will taste bland. And if the water gets any hotter, your cup of Joe loses all its flavor.
The right water for coffee makers is up for debate. Hard and unfiltered water contains magnesium and calcium in high amounts. These minerals may damage cheaper coffee makers due to scaling.
Hence, some high-quality coffee makers, like the Keurig K55 come with a descaling function. To ensure the machine does not do more harm to itself. Using BPA-free plastics is also a top priority.
To meet Barista standards for brewing coffee. Always brew using filtered or tap water. Unless the coffee maker comes with its own set of instructions on how to brew coffee.
Keeping Your Drip Coffee Maker Clean
What goes into cleaning a drip coffee maker? By cleaning it regularly, you’re not only affecting the quality of your coffee.
But also prolonging the shelf life of the coffee maker itself.
If the parts of the drip machine are dishwasher-friendly, then great! If not, then you need a damp cloth to wipe the insides of the chamber pot. Use a grout brush if the pot is narrow.Mix half water and half vinegar in the water reservoir. And place a standard paper filter in the coffee basket.
Brew this mixture as you would coffee. But stop halfway through the process. And allow the vinegar mixture to dissolve any unwanted deposits. I would recommend letting the mixture sit for a complete hour.
Resume the process until the brewing is complete. Once it’s finished replace the paper filter with a new one. And change the water in the reservoir.
Once there’s fresh water in the reservoir and a new paper filter. You brew the pot again to get rid of the vinegar smell.
The carafe can be cleaned with warm water and sponge. Make sure the carafe is free from dust and moisture once it’s placed on its spot. In case the debris doesn’t come off. They’re lime deposits that need a descaling detergent.
Now I know it’s not easy getting to know the inside and out of a brand new coffee machine. Each drip coffee maker I have reviewed in this article is well-engineered. That’s for sure.
The primary aspect I chose to evaluate is the brewing process. But that doesn’t mean convenience and handling have been neglected. All important and necessary factors are all taken into consideration.
In the end, you need to determine what feature or features matter more. For your brewing requirements and caffeine cravings!
Automatic coffee machines might not be the best way to make your coffee, and dedicated coffee-enthusiast and baristas often frown upon that idea and vote …
The thing about manual brewing is that it’s a traditional coffee-making technique. Traditional and timeless, which explains why so many cafes all around the world …
